Apple TV Update 1.1 Breaks Custom Screen Savers

Apple have just released the first Apple TV update which adds a Youtube plugin. Unfortunately they also changed a ton of other back-end stuff which currently prevents custom screen savers from running amongst other things. Hopefully there'll be a fix soon. As soon as there is, I'll recompile all screen savers for the new version.

Apple TV Screen Saver: RGB Ribbons

I've put together a new screen saver which you can download from here:

http://datafrog.org/AppleTV/RGBRibbons-0.1.zip

It displays 3 "ribbons" floating, twirling and curling about the screen.

The picture below doesn't really do it any justice - it looks much better when it's moving.

To install, just copy RGBRibbons.frss to /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Screen\ Savers/
No need to restart Finder - just go to the settings menu and in the Screen Saver submenu, change it there and select Preview to take a look.

Please note that this is a fairly "processor intensive" screen saver and I seriously don't recommend leaving it on 24/7. In reality it will *probably* be fine but as it runs the ATV's CPU at around 40%, I wouldn't want to risk running it all the time, given how hot the ATV gets - even when the processor's idle.
While it doesn't look like much, there are actually 360 sprites moving on screen at any one time.

I'm planning to optimise the screen saver soon to bring down the processor usage - I might start on the number of sprites!

Here's a screen saver I made which should run on any Apple TV. You'll need ssh enabled on your Apple TV to install. More info on hacking the Apple TV can be found at http://www.awkwardtv.org.

It's a Quartz animation of multi-coloured stars falling from the top of the screen with a moving and colour changing aurora in the background. It's my first go at building something with Quartz Composer - I hope you like it!

It looks like this:

Download Here

To install:

1. Transfer FallingStars.frss to your AppleTV
2. Copy FallingStars.frss into /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Screen\ Savers/
3. Restart Finder

Enjoy!

Rally-X DS

Rally X (for those who don't know) is a classic arcade game from 1980. It's one of those game I keep coming back to in my mame collection and thought would be perfect for the DS.

This is the first DS program I've attempted to write and is currently nowhere near completion, though I thought I'd post what I've done so far and see what kind of feedback I get. Graphics are simple but faithful to the original - just how I like it!

Currently, you can drive around the map (same map as the arcade version) and that's about it. Like in the arcade game, if the car hits a wall, it will move and turn by itself when you're not controlling it with the pad.

I'm using the DS's hardware rotation to show the car turning. This doesn't seem to be visible on DeSmuME but works fine in Dualis and on the DS hardware itself

Things missing are a map and scoreboard / fuel status - these are all destined for the second screen.

It's also missing enemy cars, flags, rocks, splash screen, sound, etc. I'll be adding these things when I can and hope for completion soon

The car is aligned to an invisible grid to keep it in line with the map - same as the arcade.

By the way, if you can get the car to stop (jammed in a corner, please let me know how - it shouldn't be able to stop moving at all!

the .nds works fine on my GBAMP though I haven't been able to check the other builds (.sc and .gba)

Download here!

Please let me know what you think!

Cheers
